The wines, well represented across the stylistic spectrum, exhibited the characteristics that buyers have come to expect from the kind of rare, beautifully aged vintages that are sold on the Nederburg Auction platform.
Francois Rautenbach from Singita Game Reserve said that there were some very exciting wines in the chardonnay category, as well as some “very distinctly stylistic chenins”, while Tsogo Sun’s Garry Reed put the emphasis on the dessert wines, saying that one “can’t forget the Nederburg 1982 Edelkeur that really drank like angel’s syrup. It was amazing.”
Winemag.co.za editor and wine judge Christian Eedes’ chose the Monis Collectors Marsala 1983 as his wine of the day. “I would urge buyers to look at the fortifieds”, he said.
Referring to the sweet and fortified classes, Nederburg Auction manager Dalene Steyn said that it has been interesting to note that both buyers and the 2015 selection panel were very positive about South Africa’s sweet and fortified wines. “The feeling seems to be that South African consumers do not yet realise what treasure troves we have in this country, particularly in terms of value for money, which will most certainly change once the international market discovers the sweet and fortified gems we have to offer!”
