Raka Wines
Winter is a slow time on the Raka farm, or at least that is what the sunny days make you think! But the preparation for the new vintage is in full swing…

Saartjie and Johnathan pruning Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted in 1999.

Raka Wines started pruning the vineyards as cutting back the vines trigger the vineyards to develop new growth. Pruning is also important for the overall health of the vines. In this way we do all we can to optimize the development of the 2025 crop.

Our red wines mature in oak barrels for 12 months and it was now also time for racking the 2023 red wines from the barrels and filling the barrels with the 2024 vintage reds. An advantage of racking is that you leave sediment behind. Sediment is dead yeast cells and other solids leftover from fermentation that settle over time and reduces the use of filters. The next step is blending our famous Spliced and Quinary blends… more about that intricate process in our next newsletter.
