We share some of the highlights from the latest wine award ceremonies: A 2024 Cab steals the show, Chenin Blancs made from old vines triumph, and a Plett winery proves that it's not only the Cape producing the country's best wines.

South African Young Wine Show Awards at Elsenburg - Jeanine

For the second successive year a wooded Cabernet Sauvignon – this time from Diemersdal Estate – excelled by clinching the prestigious General Smuts Trophy Trophy as overall SA Champion Young Wine, after also being named as the country’s Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the South African Young Wine Show 2024. The awards ceremony was held on Friday, 23 August 2024 at Elsenburg College, Stellenbosch.

 

Absa Top 10 Pinotage Awards Ceremony at Ashanti Estate - Jeanine

The 2024 Absa Top 10 Pinotage Competition once again spotlighted the best of South African winemaking, underscoring the resilience, diversity, and excellence of our wine industry. This year's winners were announced at an awards luncheon on Thursday, 29 August 2024 at the beautiful Ashanti Estate in Paarl.

 

Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge at Erinvale - Judy

The Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge awards function was held at Erinvale Hotel in Somerset West on Friday, 30 August 2024. Nine out of the 10 awarded wines were from Certified Old Vines. The 10th wine is made from an older vine that's not yet certified (Nabygelegen's Chenin Blanc). This means that all winners are from vineyards over 35 years old – such a coup for the Old Vine Project!

 

Amorim Cap Classique Challenge at Clara's Barn - Jeanine

The winners of the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge 2024 were announced at an elegant awards luncheon on Thursday, 19 September 2024 at Clara's Barn on Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate. Newstead Lund Wines triumped as the overall winner of the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge for the second time in four years.

 

Absa Perold Cape Blend and Pinotage Rosé Awards at Ischia restaurant - Judy

The Pinotage Association's Absa Perold Cape Blend and Pinotage Rosé Awards function was hosted on Thursday, 26 September at Ischia Restaurant in Stellenbosch. It was a celebration of the rich diversity South African Pinotage. The Pinotage Association also marked the graduation of their WiL students – an inspiring achievement.
