We are experiencing exciting times at Villiera Wines. While we are planning for the adventure of a new harvest in 2024, we are reflecting on 2023, which is nearing the end in a flurry of activity. This year began warm, resulting in white wines that are ripe and more tropical in style. Then, before the end of the harvest, the rain began and it didn't stop until the end of October. With all the rain we have had this month, 2023 promises to be the wettest year since the Grier Family purchased Villiera in 1983. The rain this year was accompanied by a couple of severe storms, resulting in the loss of trees. However, the vineyards have responded well to the high rainfall, and 2024 looks promising.
The climax of 2023 was the celebration of our 40th anniversary at our annual Fizzy Therapy Festival on Saturday, 25 November. The Fizzy Therapy Festival was a resounding success. One of the highlights was the enthusiastic embrace of whimsical Mad Hatter hats by festival-goers. Festival attendees showcased their creativity and added a sense of lighthearted fun to the celebration making it a truly memorable and enchanting experience for all who attended.
2024 Platter's ratings
We were delighted that our reserve red, Villiera Monro Merlot 2021, was awarded a 5-star rating in the 2024 Platter's South African Wine Guide. This accolade reflects the meticulous winemaking process and the unique characteristics that set Monro Merlot apart.
Villiera Monro Brut 2016, The Clan 2018, and Villiera Punchion Pinot Noir 2022 were all awarded 4.5 stars. We achieved a total of eleven 4-star ratings for our other wines with five of these being awarded to our Cap Classiques, namely, Villiera Brut Natural 2018, Tradition Brut, Tradition Brut Rosé, Shooting Star Brut, and Pearls of Nectar.
Adding to these results, six of our still wines and Cap Classiques have been recognized with Good Value ratings, underscoring our commitment to delivering exceptional quality across our diverse range.
