Wildekrans Wine Estate recently hosted a group of esteemed sommeliers from Gauteng’s top restaurants for an immersive experience designed to deepen their connection to the world of winemaking. Guests included Theo Ngobeni, well-known influencer and representative of the Cuvee Club; Lethabo Mothwa from the Marriott Hotel Group; Grey Chikwape from the Potluck Club; and Mxolisi Mahatshi from Signature Restaurant.
The visit offered these professionals a unique opportunity to step beyond their roles in the dining room and into the heart of the vineyard, where they worked alongside winemaker De Wet Viljoen, even taking part in our grape harvest.
Harvesting grapes was more than a physical task – it was a chance to engage with the foundation of Wildekrans wines. The sommeliers gained firsthand knowledge of the meticulous care that goes into producing each harvest, from the nuances of vine management to the selection of premium-quality grapes.
The experience continued with an exclusive tasting led by De Wet, who shared his insights into the estate’s wine portfolio. This close interaction allowed the sommeliers to deepen their understanding of Wildekrans’ philosophy and the distinct characteristics that set our wines apart.
We understand that the role of a sommelier extends far beyond recommending wines to diners; they are vital storytellers who bring the vineyard’s essence to life at the table.
By visiting the estate, sommeliers gain an intimate knowledge of the terroir, the winemaking process, and the passion behind each bottle. This understanding enriches the dining experience, enabling them to guide patrons with confidence and authenticity. Well-informed sommeliers can highlight the unique qualities of the wines they serve, fostering a deeper appreciation for the craft.
At Wildekrans, we value the importance of fostering relationships with sommeliers. These partnerships enhance our wines' representation and allow us to stay connected to the evolving needs of the hospitality industry. By engaging with sommeliers like this, we aim to build meaningful collaborations that ensure our wines are shared with care, respect, and knowledge.
Moments like these, where the vineyard and the restaurant meet, lay the groundwork for lasting connections and mutual growth. These connections not only ensure that our wines are presented with accuracy and enthusiasm but also open the door for valuable feedback that drives continuous improvement. By investing in their education and fostering strategic partnerships, we strengthen the bond between the cellar and the restaurant, ensuring that the story of Wildekrans Wines is shared far and wide, one glass at a time.
