Simonsig Family Vineyards is navigating an exciting new phase as its leadership transition continues to take shape.

Simonsig Family Vineyards' leadership transition began with the appointment of Ilana de Vries as managing director in June 2024. Reflecting on this change, Francois and Johan Malan acknowledge the careful planning and strategic thinking that have been integral to ensuring the business remains strong, sustainable, and forward-looking.

Since 1942, Simonsig has been a proud family-owned business, with the Malan family’s core philosophy focused on innovation, growth, sustainability, and financial robustness. The guiding principle has always been that Simonsig is not merely owned by the current generation, but rather cared for with future generations in mind, ensuring that the work done today continues to benefit those who come after us. This enduring commitment to preserving the business for the next generation mirrors the practices of other prominent international wine families, where multiple generations have managed to keep the business within the family.

However, as in any family business, the time eventually comes to make that crucial step forward. For Simonsig, the transition to the third generation is particularly poignant, as it marks a significant shift in leadership and strategy. Recognising that the complexity of the business requires experienced leadership beyond family members, the Malan brothers –Johan and Francois – decided to bring in external expertise to ensure the company’s continued success.

With careful planning, expert advice, and a focus on long-term sustainability, Simonsig appointed a new managing director – a decision that represents both continuity and innovation. This forward-thinking approach led to the appointment of Ilana de Vries, the first non-family member to take on the role of managing director at Simonsig. Her leadership is not only a natural progression for the company but also a groundbreaking moment, as she is the first woman to hold this important role.

“We give her all our support at this critical stage in the development of our family business,” says Francois Malan, underscoring the full confidence the family has in Ilana’s leadership.

Simonsig has flourished over the past 40 years under the stewardship of the second-generation Malan brothers. The business has weathered industry challenges and grown exponentially, and Johan and Francois are confident that Ilana’s leadership will take the business from strength to strength.

“I have all the faith that Ilana has what it takes to guide and grow Simonsig into the future, with the values and skill set that truly aligns with our business and family values,” says Johan Malan.

With a wealth of experience across diverse sectors including agriculture, supply chain, and logistics, Ilana has already made a positive impact since stepping into her role. Her leadership has brought fresh ideas, while the experienced team at Simonsig continues to work collaboratively to ensure the company thrives in the highly competitive wine industry.

While Ilana takes the reins as managing director, Johan and Francois Malan remain integral to Simonsig, continuing in their roles as owners and directors. The business retains its family ownership, and family values remain the cornerstone of everything Simonsig does. Third generation family members Michael Malan and Christelle Malan also remain actively involved in the business as cellarmaster and finance manager.

Simonsig’s story is one of perseverance, innovation, and legacy. The company’s continued success under Ilana’s leadership not only reflects the evolution of Simonsig but also provides valuable insights for other family-owned businesses navigating similar leadership transitions. The team at Simonsig looks forward to building on this foundation, ensuring continued growth and excellence in the years to come.
