Winery spotlight: Ridgeback Wines
There’s something quietly determined about Ridgeback Wines. Perhaps it’s in the name – inspired by the strength and stamina of the Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs that still roam the farm – or perhaps it’s found in winemaker Toit Wessels, who’s been here since the very beginning.
What started in 2000 with a modest white wine has grown into one of the region’s most awarded cellars, recognised year after year for reds with pedigree and whites that hum with vitality. Ridgeback’s cellar, built in 2003, is tucked beside a duck pond and surrounded by vineyards that Toit himself helped plant. His approach is less interference and more attentiveness – letting the soil speak, and the fruit lead. Ridgeback is a quiet corner of Paarl with a steady hand and a thoughtful heart.
