Attentive to maintaining our appeal amongst a loyal base, we’re also looking to the future, to build report with an exciting new generation of wine lovers.
A much admired and widely exported brand, we’re one of South Africa’s longest-running wineries. We’ve outlived more than 11 generations, survived wars, withstood many historical changes, moved with the times to embrace technological advances and, in recent years, has taken a leading role in adapting to climate change.
Our story reflects a remarkable capacity for endurance but, more than that, an ability to flourish. Since the early 20th century, our international award-winning reputation has continued to grow – a testimony to a unique combination of courage and curiosity in finding ways to become better.
“A South African favourite, Nederburg has always kept with the times, one way or another,” says Marguerite Beukes, our brand manager.
“We’ll soon be showing a new side to our personality, with a range of exciting changes planned. Our home in Paarl is expanding, with an increased focus on informal hosting and special events, whilst retaining our special The Manor restaurant, situated in our historic homestead.”
As far as the women of Nederburg are concerned, evolution is non-negotiable in both their personal and work lives. See what they have to say:
Marguerite Beukes, Nederburg brand manager
“I thrive when I’m challenged, so it’s very exciting for me to be part of the dynamic process of helping shape industry norms. We’re working on innovative new campaigns, pushing me to think creatively and authentically about our brand, and taking into account emerging consumer trends.
“It’s inspiring to be part of the Nederburg team, fostering connections that go beyond the product, creating a sense of community and belonging among consumers. We’re honouring our rich heritage while staying in touch with the needs of consumers. This balance ensures that Nederburg remains a beloved and premium choice for wine enthusiasts.
“On the personal side, with two little boys constantly challenging my perspective and reminding me to be open to new experiences, there’s really no choice but to be proactive and keep growing.”
Kate Jackson, Nederburg general manager
“I find it deeply intriguing how the wine industry, particularly Nederburg, is boldly embracing innovation while challenging long-held traditions.
“This journey has been personally enriching as I witness firsthand how we are redefining the brand’s identity. It transcends mere wine sales; instead, I am concentrating on fostering genuine connections and crafting experiences that deeply resonate across diverse audiences.
“The brand’s transformation has prompted me to reflect on my own journey, provoking a reassessment of my priorities and a willingness to explore new avenues that ignite my creativity and lead to profoundly enriching experiences. In today's fast-paced world, personal evolution is crucial for remaining relevant and competitive.
“For Nederburg, evolution and reinvention are essential to maintain our leadership in the wine industry. To thrive in the dynamic market landscape, we need to preserve and respect the brand’s legacy, whilst meeting the ever-evolving expectations of discerning consumers who are seeking authenticity and innovation in every sip.”
Zinaschke Steyn, Nederburg winemaker (red wines)
“I absolutely love my job as there is literally never a dull moment! We work in an environment that offers lots of challenges and opportunities for continuous improvement and this fuels me.
“During my time here, I’ve evolved not only as a winemaker, but also as a leader, a colleague, and a human being in general. This job has taught me patience and resilience - qualities that I believe are vital when embarking on a journey of reinvention.
“It’s extremely satisfying to look back a couple of years and see how my team and I have evolved and grown by constantly challenging the norm and always looking for ways to innovate and raise the bar in everything we do, to ensure the guaranteed consistent quality in every bottle of wine we produce.
“Embracing evolution ensures that we stay ahead of industry shifts, maintain relevance and appeal in the market, and continue to deliver quality and value to our consumers.
“I think we’re doing a good job already after 233 years of winemaking at Nederburg, considering the three prestigious trophies we achieved at the recent Trophy Wine Show, for the 2022 vintage of The Winemasters Shiraz.”
Jamie Williams, Nederburg winemaker (white wines)
“Talking about evolution! I’m currently embracing my new role as head of the white wine team with enthusiasm and gratitude.
“After six years as an assistant in the team, I now play an even bigger part in building a wine legacy on the shoulders of giants. It’s a great feeling and I’m thrilled to be involved in taking Nederburg to a broader audience, challenging me and my team to keep creating wines that appeal to a wide consumer base.
“I believe that wine is the way to connect people, ignite the senses, and celebrate life. That’s how I try to live and enjoy my life. But with balance and with many layers. I’m a wife, a mom, a winemaker, a friend, a daughter, a granddaughter, a colleague.
“That’s also how I like wine to be. Many-sided to keep things interesting, but always backed by good values and a firm backbone. It’s paying off, judging by the Trophy Wine Show trophy we earned for the 2023 vintage of The Winemasters Noble Late Harvest, as well as Greg Sherwood MW’s recent 95 points score for Heritage Heroes The Anchor Man Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023. Add to that a gold medal for the same wine at The Drinks Business’ Global Chenin Blanc Masters of 2024.
“Very thankful for the recognition of our white wine team, I’m cognisant of the fact that the bar is set very high. Just another reason I need to stay on top of my game and keep renewing myself, my team and our approach to winemaking.”
Isabel Teubes, Nederburg viticulturist
“As a viticulturist, I’m responsible for our vineyards in Paarl, as well as those of our wide network of growers across the Cape’s top winegrowing areas.
“Yes, it’s demanding, but so stimulating and exciting. I work with nature, so there’s a fair amount of uncertainty involved. That’s why it’s important in my role, to spot and handle problems before they arise, as far as possible. You can be certain that small problems will become bigger issues if you don’t address them as early on as possible.
“The secret is to work with nature, not against it. This philosophy has been the catalyst for a range of regenerative farming practices we’re implementing. It’s nothing new, though, it’s just evolved thinking, if you ask me! The more we work with nature, the more we learn, the more we can adapt and improve our thinking and practical approaches. Modern technological advances are also hugely helpful, assisting us in better decision-making.
“I have an immense passion for wine and agriculture, so tasting a better final product as a result of better farming, is very encouraging.
“I’m proud to be part of the team. Together we strive for consistently in all we do, but with a healthy dose of innovation and vigour so we can keep bettering our best efforts and help take this amazing brand to new heights.”
Imellia Prins, Nederburg assistant winemaker (red wines)
“We’re heading into our blending season; where our team’s creativity, science and passion come together to create wines of distinction.
“It’s a challenging yet exhilarating space, requiring us to step outside our comfort zone and be open. It’s a great environment for growth and building resilience, both prerequisites for evolution.
“As a wife, a mom, and career woman, I have to be open to change, keep broadening my horizons, and embrace challenges with a forward-thinking mindset.”
Linda Trautmann, The Manor head chef
“Continuously creating new, authentic, and locally inspired dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients, to match the delicious tastes of our wines, keeps me inspired and on my toes! I am challenged daily to create new memorable experiences for our guests with a strong connection to our heritage.
“So, reinvention is crucial in what I do, pushing me as a chef to stay up to date with food trends and diners’ preferences.
“I must keep it fresh and exciting, to give our visitors a reason to come back, time after time, but also to attract new interest.
“Our menus change with the seasons - this winter seems to be a hit so far. One of our current most popular dishes is a three-cheese (sweetmilk, parmesan and white cheddar) plus white wine fondue with grilled ostrich and bacon skewers and crostini. Our slow-cooked pork belly with caramelised apple, butterbean mash and mustard sauce is just as in-demand. It’s soul-warming to come sit here in The Manor, in front of the fireplace, and treat yourself to wholesome, delicious food, and a glass of wine, of course.
“And we’re soon launching new food and wine pairings, so watch this space!”
Thembi Ndwandwe, The Manor destination manager
“My time here at Nederburg – not even a year – has been a thrilling ride from the start. It’s shaped me as a person and every time I look around me, I’m so proud of what my team and I’ve accomplished here in just a few months.
“Gosh, we managed to secure the title of South Africa’s Best Restaurant during Restaurant Week XXL earlier this year! It’s been a great encouragement for all of us, giving us the motivation to push on in reinventing the space and offerings soon to be launched, all ahead of the busy summer season.”
Adri Coetzee, The Manor hospitality manager
“What I find most interesting about my work, is conceptualising ideas and plans for different events. I’ve put in many hours to create new experiences to delight and excite those visiting us at The Manor. It takes constant reinvention, rethinking, reimagining!
“We’re placing a greater emphasis on our wedding offering, with new packages launching soon. I can’t wait to welcome more couples to our beautiful venues here on the farm, with many tailor-made options available to make the occasions as special as possible.
“This is what we’re about here at The Manor – creating memorable moments! It’s the best feeling to be an intrinsic part of growing Nederburg into an attraction that welcomes visitors from all walks of life to enjoy our national heritage.
“I’m also a wife and have two talented daughters. I’m proud of the life I lead, and strive to instil a strong sense of compassion and self-worth in my children. We learn as we go and evolve to become better people.”
