Morgenster presents olive oil tasting courses

Morgenster are currently coordinating 3 Olive Oil tasting courses to be presented by one of the world’s most experienced Olive Oil tasters, Dr. Luciano Scarselli.

Dr. Scarselli is the panel leader of the official panel of Tuscany Region, one of nine official panels in Italy. He is also the person in charge of the Tuscany Region Olive Oil Control and Quality Improvement, as well as a teacher in sensorial analysis at the Pisa University.

Course 1 is a three-day beginner course from Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 November 2004. This will concentrate on the classification of olive oil, chemical and sensory characteristics and health aspects of olive oil as well as the production practices for producing high quality olive oil. Practical tasting of local and international olive oils will take place throughout the course. (Cost R3300)

Course 2 is a one day refresher course on Thursday 25 November 2004 for participants of previous Scarselli courses, and will focus on new tasting sheets from the International Olive Oil Council, new laws and regulations and tastings of local and international olive oils. (Cost: R1100)

Course 3 on Friday 26 November 2004 is only for participants who have already completed the beginners course. It is a one-day presentation on the threshold of defects - the first and most important step for a tasting panel. Successful participants will receive a certificate and form part of a panel to taste local olive oils for Extra Virgin classification. (Cost: R1100)

These courses are the only courses in South Africa presented by a qualified professional taster and panel instructor. Certificates will be issued to participants on completion of each course. All lecture material and a lunch is included in the cost of each course. Courses will be held at the Morgenster wine cellar in Somerset West.
