Fleur du Cap releases stunning trio of new Unfiltered wines

Fleur du Cap has just released three superb new white vintages in their premier range of Unfiltered wines. The lush Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc 2004 sporting an elegant new look was launched together with the acclaimed blend, Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Viognier Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2003 Limited Release, and Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Semillon 2003.

Shaped on the vine in select vineyard blocks, these wines were guided by the winemaking team at the Bergkelder in empathy with the natural direction of the grapes themselves. Inspired by nature, the premier Fleur du Cap Unfiltered range heralds a style of winemaking with wines of greater complexity and richness. This is achieved by returning to more traditional winemaking practices by relying on sedimentation, racking and fining as opposed to filtration, thereby maximising the preservation of the colour and flavour elements until the wine is ready for bottling.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc 2004 is a full-bodied summer wine made from grapes that showed ripe tropical flavours when harvested. Contact with the lees has enhanced the mouth feel of the wine and added greater depth to the already concentrated fruit flavours.

"This is a powerful Sauvignon blanc showing a mixture of flavours dominated by herbaceous notes and ripe tropical fruit. The full-bodied wine has a zesty complexity and is bursting with intense herbaceous flavours on the palate that leaves a long lingering aftertaste, " says winemaker Kobus Gerber.

This well rounded Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect wine to be enjoyed with pasta, green salads, risotto, oysters and grilled sole.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Viognier Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2003 Limited Release is the second vintage of this distinctive blend to be released in the Unfiltered range. The wine comprises 25% of each of the four white wine varieties, but all cultivars were vinified separately and matured for nine months in a combination of new, second and third fill small French oak barrels. This wine with its brilliant deep straw colour shows predominantly gooseberry and asparagus flavours typical of Sauvignon blanc and Semillon on the nose, while spicy and floral flavours characteristic of Viognier dominate the palate ending with the creamy and nutty flavour obtained from the Chardonnay.

"This uniquely balanced wine is the ideal accompaniment to rich pasta dishes, curries and succulent red meat dishes, " says Gerber.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Semillon 2003 was made from handpicked grapes from vineyards in the Stellenbosch region. In the cellar the grapes received no skin contact. B√Ętonnage - the practice of stirring up the lees - took place every second week to accentuate the richness and flavour of this wood matured wine.

On the nose this full-bodied wine is packed with rich layers of tropical fruit and distinctive citrus flavours with melon and vanilla oak aromas on the palate. The Unfiltered Semillon is perfect when paired with fish and seafood but goes equally well with a wide variety of veal, poultry and smoked meat dishes.
