The empowerment initiative, spearheaded by the Stellenbosch Agricultural Society in association with leading supplier of cork closures, Amorim, is the first of its kind and aims to give workers an insight into cork's journey from bark to bottle.
Highlights of the tour include visits to the cork forest and manufacturing sites, historical sights in Lisbon and Porto and a trip to the world-renowned Burmester Port estate in Portugal's spectacular Douro Valley.
The South African Farm Workers Association identified cellar workers - involved in the wine industry's bottling process - who would benefit from such an experience.
According to Joaquim Sá, managing director of Amorim South Africa, Amorim and the Agricultural Society will be working together to ensure that similar empowerment projects take place on a regular basis.
Joining cellar workers on the trip is Kobus van der Merwe, manager of the Stellenbosch Agricultural Society.
