Only 11 percent choose a wine by the name of a grape compared to 22 percent who choose by the name of the wine and 18 percent by country of origin. Sixteen percent follow recommendations from TV programs or from friends, and only 10 percent on price. The high percentage choosing by name may reflect the growing importance of large international brands in the UK market. Price appears to play a surprisingly small role. It may be that price is less important in the on-trade.
Fifty-two percent of the over 500 customers surveyed in the week beginning June 28th said that they 'stick with the wine they know,' while 62 percent rated their wine knowledge as 'average to poor.'
