The growth in local cheese products over the past decade is absolutely phenomenal
Irish passion melts pungent flavours when Signature Chef Gerard Reidy of Five Flies Restaurant, situated in the heart of Cape Town, creates fine cuisine with a selection of his favourite local cheeses at the annual SA Cheese Festival on Monday, 26 April at 4pm.

From Melt-In-Your-Mouth recipes to Mozarella Makeovers ... catch Reidy in action at the LG Celebrity Chef’s Kitchen, one of the most popular venues at this annual Festival, where he’ll demonstrate his culinary flair with his favourite local cheeses ranging from fresh, semi-soft, to full-bodied stronger cheeses.

Recipes that he will be sharing with his interactive audience include the Warm Goat’s Cheese with fresh herbs and pear and vanilla chutney – his number one choice of cheese and a firm favourite on Five Flies’ chic menu of contemporary cuisine.

His ‘cheesy’ spin on Phyllo Parcels and step-by-step instructions on how to stuff a chicken breast with Parma Ham and Buffalo Mozzarella for a succulent main course indulgence will leave you with more than just a whiff of kitchen wisdom.

'The growth in variety and quality of local cheese products over the past decade is absolutely phenomenal. From the smallest farmer to large producers, everyone is passionate about their products and the proof is definitely in the taste,' says Irish born Reidy.

Since drawn to Africa’s creativity and unbounded opportunities nine year’s ago, he still believes that as a country relatively new to the world-wide culinary circle, South Africa is yet to unmask its boundless potential and fresh tastes. 'Great is the satisfaction, knowing that as a local chef, I have so much more authenticity to add to the global gourmet pot,' he says.

The 2004 SA Cheese Festival will be held on the Boland farm, Bien Donné (on the R45 between Paarl and Franschhoek) from Saturday, 24 April to Tuesday, 27 April.

Tickets for the Festival are available from Computicket, Cape Town Tourism, Paarl Tourism, Franschhoek Tourism and Agri-Expo at R55 per person until 23 April. As of 24 April tickets will be sold at the gate, Computicket and the tourism offices at R70 per head.
