Food, wine and eye-catching art at the Grapes, Gourmet and Gallery Evening

Winchester Mansions offers the perfect antidote for election day tension with a delectable 6-course menu skillfully matched to superb Cabrière Estate wines and Jill Trappler’s captivating art at its famous Grapes, Gourmet and Gallery Evening on Wednesday, 14 April – sheer bliss after standing in tiring queues all day long.

Cellarmaster Achim von Arnim of Cabrière Estate and Executive Chef, Jonathan Staley, have created a unique 6-course menu that promises a food and wine marriage made in heaven.

This gourmet evening is hosted by the hotel’s renowned restaurant 'Harveys at the Mansions' in collaboration with The Association for Visual Arts and Cabrière Estate. Feast your eyes on Trappler’s abstract paintings before you indulge in a true food and wine adventure.

'We wanted the wine to dance with the food without the one dominating the other,' said the cellarmaster of Cabrière Estate, Achim von Arnim. Von Arnim and Chef Staley have done just that by creating excellent combinations such as Scottish salmon with phyllo pastry served with the non-sparkling, blush coloured Pierre Jourdan Tranquille. The wine picks up the salmon flavours and also complements the colour perfectly.

Enjoy sprinkbok loin with thyme rouge butter and a pumpkin fritter paired with Arnim Sauvignon Rouge – a dry blend of cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc. The wine amplifies the game taste of the springbok and brings out the earthy flavours of the mushrooms. Savour the almond milk tart with Italian meringue and Pierre Jourdan Blanc de Blancs before you round this divine evening off with the estate’s potstill Brandy distilled from chardonnay grapes, Fine de Jourdan, and deep fried blue cheese ice cream.

Jill Trappler – a full-time professional artist – has spent most of her adult life teaching drawing and painting in a variety of institutions. She also initiated and facilitated the formation of craft, printing and weaving employment projects for women in Crossroads and Khayelitsha. Her work is represented in private collections around the world and locally in a variety of public and corporate art collections, including the South African National Gallery, SABC, Investec and Vodacom.

The evening starts at 19h00 and costs R185 per person, inclusive of a glass of wine per course.
