Uitkyk Estate is one of the largest wine farms on the Stellenbosch Wine Route, situated at the foothills of Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. The Uitkyk Domain is a South African company ultimately owned by The Paulsen Familiae Foundation, which holds worldwide investments in wine and spirits producers and distributors as well as real estate.
The purpose of The Paulsen Familiae Foundation, among others, is to promote, support, and preserve the arts and culture, as well as to promote and support initiatives related to the protection of the environment and the impacts of climate change, specifically those related to the Polar Regions. In alignment with the purpose of the foundation, the environmental integrity of the Uitkyk Estate which extends into the Simonsberg Conservatory will be sustained. In 2011 Uitkyk Estate become a Biodiversity & Wine Initiative Champion, the 20th to do so. This prestigious award was later renamed in 2022 to WWF Conservation Champions programme.
Aptly named, “Uitkyk”, meaning “look out”, the estate boasts unsurpassed views of Simonsberg Mountain, Cape Peninsula, and Table Mountain. In addition to the superb views, the estate is home to a double story flat roofed 1788 Georgian-style manor house, one of only three of its kind left in South Africa. In 1998, following a 3-year project, murals concealed under 15 layers of paint in the manor house hallway were uncovered for all to see.
In 1929, the potential for exceptional quality winemaking from the estate was first identified. The planting of Chenin Blanc, Cape Riesling, Cinsaut and Cabernet vineyards saw the start of the production of flagship wines and the Uitkyk Grand Reserve Brandy, a legacy the estate is still known for today.
Combining this unique history of the estate with a clear vision of quality and excellence for the future, The Uitkyk Domain is set to rejuvenate the prestigious reputation of the wines produced from the estate.
