5 Fun ways to celebrate Heritage Day in the winelands

Heritage Day must be one of the most underrated public holidays. By September we all need a bonus long weekend to see us through the last stretch of the year. Add to that the arrival of Spring and the call to celebrate our rich South African heritage with all of our delicious local foods and you've got the perfect recipe for a great day.

Stokkiesdraai Braaidag @ Bosman Wellington

Bosman Family Wines invites you to celebrate our South Africa-ness with a traditional braai on Heritage Day, aka Braaidag, on Friday, 24 September.

Begin with a refreshing walk through the vineyards, stopping en route to taste wines and admire the spectacular views. The trail ends at the cellar where a long and lovely lunch will be served under the oaks.

  • Reserve your own private table.
  • Live entertainment: Newton
  • Family Friendly Event: Pony Rides, Ice cream, and kiddies meals can be purchased additionally.
  • Kids under 12 free entrance.
  • Open air and wide spacing to comply to Covid Regulations. If it’s raining, the event will be postponed.
  • Sanitizing station at check in. Remember your mask.
  • Vineyard walk from 11h00 to 13H00.

Rickety Bridge Heritage FUNdation RUN

Rickety Bridge Wines in Franschhoek is kicking off Heritage Day with a 5km FUNdation RUN in the vineyards with a few wine stops on the way.

Once you have finished the 5km fun run, sit back, relax and order a breakfast for champions from our braai-inspired menu. Think boerie rolls, hamburgers, ribs and more. At 10h30 we’ll start with a lucky draw on the Wine Tasting Centre lawn, that includes the following incredible prizes:

  • 2 nights stay at Rickety Bridge Manor House for two people, including breakfast and a wine tasting
  • Wine Blending Experience at the Wine Tasting Centre for two people
  • 2 Icon Range Tastings at the Wine Tasting Centre
  • FUNdation Stone Hamper
  • Tutored winemakers tasting for up to 8 people
  • R500 Paulina’s Restaurant voucher

The cost is R100 per runner, your ticket includes 4 or more wine tastings (MCC, Foundation Stone White, Foundation Stone Rosé, Foundation Stone Red and Rickety Bridge Pinotage) and 10% of the proceeds will go towards the mass vaccination drive in Franschhoek. There are limited entries available and all Covid protocols will be in place. 

The braai-inspired menu will be on offer until 17h00, so bring along the family and spend the day at Rickety Bridge.

Warwick Heritage Weekend

Warwick Wines is running their curated Braai Box for the weekend of 24 - 26 September. 

In this braai box you will get Epi breads and baguettes, herbed butter, a cheese box, dips, Bobotie, Chicken kebabs, Boerewors, Potato salad and homemade Malva pudding, with the option of vegan and vegetarian boxes.
Kids are not forgotten and we have kept it simple, yet delicious, with a classic boerewors roll and chips, a giant chocolate chip cookie, Liqui fruit and some bubbles to play around with.

The Braai Box is priced at R650 for 2 people

Friday you will be entertained with live music and Saturday they will have their talented face painter.
Dress up in your best heritage outfit and impress your guests.

Boschendal September Weekend Music Picnics

For those looking to extend the Heritage Day celebrations to the weekend, Boschendal's well-loved family feast picnics are perfect.

Laze away the day under the trees at the Werf picnic with live bands on Saturday, 25 September and Sunday, 26 September. With farm-fresh picnic baskets brimming with delicious eats and treats, it’s a fun affair for the whole family.
