Villiera tops the scores in the SAWi Grand Wines Collection

The latest SAWI Grand Wines Collection classifications put Villiera firmly in the top position with the Villiera Prestige Cuvée Monro Brut achieving the highest overall points earning Villiera the Best MCC in SA as well as a Top 10 Winery in SA ranking.

The SAWi ratings aim to offer a mathematical index that represents a wine’s overall multi-vintage quality status from annual data sets. The SAWi Grand Wines Collection (GWC) classification is determined using its Algorithm of Excellence drawing results from blind tastings for all wines entered into wine competitions over the last 10 years with scores of 93 points or higher.

Villiera has been awarded a certificate of excellence indicating a consistent index mark of world distinction for the Villiera Prestige Cuvée Monro Brut and Villiera Tradition Brut NV both achieving Platinum Awards and the Villiera Chenin Blanc and Villiera Traditional Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc receiving Grand Gold Awards.

These excellent ratings also positioned Villiera as a Top 10 Winery in SA - a distinction which the entire Villiera team are incredibly honoured to receive.

The Monro Brut is the hallmark of Villiera’s Methode Cap Classique wines and proudly carries a Grier family name. The Griers have been leaders in the Cap Classique category for over three decades with the top quality of the Villiera MCC’s consistently being recognised as well as their innovation in the category. Achieving the highest scoring wine overall in the SAWi GWC classification is testament to the indelible quality of the Prestige Cuvée Monro Brut which also carries a 5-Star Platter 2019 rating. The Monro Brut is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier made from only the ‘cuvee’ (best quality juice) with a portion fermented in used oak barrels for extra complexity. 

A Platinum award for Villiera’s Tradition Brut NV, first produced in 1984 with the help of Champagne producer Jean Louis Denois,firmly entrenches the passion and skill Cellarmaster Jeff Grier has contributed to the success of Villiera’s wines. This baton being carried forward by young winemakers Alexander Grier and Nathan Valentine. The traditional blend of red and white grapes used to produce Tradition Brut displays the full balanced yeasty complexity synonymous with this style of wine with the fresh acidity and delicate fruit adding to its zestiness.

The Villiera Chenin Blanc and Traditional Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc both scored a 93+ in the SAWi classifications earning Grand Gold awards. Villiera’s Chenin Blanc wines have been consistently gaining in recognition, the Chenin Blanc being regarded as one of SA’s best value wines. The Traditional Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc comes from three old vineyard blocks, two trellised and one bush vine which adds to the full bodied creamy balance of this wine. It was also rated 90+ points in the Tim Atkins SA Special Report 2018.
