Painted Wolf Wines
We are thrilled to announce that once again we have two wines in the Double Platinum/Top 100 in the 2019 National Wine Challenge/Top 100 competition.

Jeremy Borg, our winemaker and founder had this to say: “What could be better than a life spent doing what one loves and being acknowledged for doing it well? Delighted that Painted Wolf have again managed two top 100 wines at the NWC. “

The last time we entered in 2017, we also had two wines in the top 100, both white wines: Pictus V 2016 and Old Vine Chenin 2015.

At the same time we were winning with the white wines, our current champions had just been harvested and were gently fermenting. Guillermo Pinotage 2017 is one of only four Pinotages in the top 100 and our Pack Syrah 2017 (not yet released) is one of 12 Syrahs to make the cut.

Robin von Holdt from the NWC had this to say on social media: “The top reds are frankly magnificent too. Compelling, large flights, challenging judges!“

Double Platinum/Top 10

The Pack, Guillermo Pinotage 2017 is made with Pinotage grapes from two vineyards in the Swartland: Kasteelsig, owned by Billy Hughes after whom this wine is named, and Werdie farm between Malmesbury and Darling. Both are sustainably farmed, with no irrigation and organic principles applied.

The Pack, Syrah 2017 was also made with grapes from 17 year old vines on Kasteelsig, combined with grapes from 25 year old vines from Leeuwenkuil.

Double gold

Black Pack Mourvedre 2017

Black pack wines are small volume wines usually from grapes Jeremy can’t resist. Once again this is a Kasteelsig/Leeuwenkuil combination with the Mourvedre (90%) from the former and Shiraz (10%) being provided by the latter. Read more.

Double silver

The pack, Penny Viognier 2018

In previous years, this wine was made from Viognier grapes from Kasteelsig. For 2018 vintage we sourced grapes from a new vineyard as Kasteelsig was in the grips of a serious drought. This is a mountainous site in the Breedekloof at around 700 metres above sea level. Our Viognier is named in honour of the late Penny Hughes, who, along with her husband Billy, were amongst the first supporters of our company. Like Penny, this is a rare, beautiful and poised wine. Read more.

Pictus VI 2017

This is the second premium white blend in this range. A blend of Grenache Blanc 43%,  Chenin Blanc 37% and  Viognier 20%. Each wine in the Pictus range is a blend of the best of each vintage.

The den Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

It is always gratifying to have a wine from our everyday range on a list like this. Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly sourced from the Helderberg areas of Stellenbosch and Agter-Paarl. It is rounded off with smaller percentages of other red Bordeaux varietals. Read more.

Jeremy said this about our wins: “Our Double Gold and three Double Silver successes are a testament to the various growers supplying grapes for Painted Wolf and friends from whom we buy finished wine to blend with ours. Thank-you Madre from Leeuwenkuil for all of her help in the cellar. A true pack effort, making fantastic wine and funding conservation.”
