Zevenwacht Wine Estate situated on the beautiful Stellenbosch Wine Route is a modern wine farm with a 300-year history.

Zevenwacht 360 Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Owned and managed by the Johnson Family, the Estate has a strong commitment to historic and cultural preservation as well as conservation of the surrounding indigenous environment. Two prime farming locations provide the grapes for the Zevenwacht winery. The home vineyard on the Estate’s panoramic 450-hectare maritime influenced property overlooking False Bay, supplies the majority of the grapes. It is here that the charming Cape Dutch architecture styled homestead is to be found, sitting on the banks of a little lake. The farm Zevenrivieren, situated at the crest of the Helshoogte Pass, high up in the Banghoek Valley, provides winemaker, Hagen Viljoen, with a boutique selection of cool climate grapes that add to the fascinating variety of the wines.

Semillon grape, the minor grape in this blend, making a major contribution
The grapes used for the Zevenwacht 360 Sauvignon Blanc 2018 are a blend of 92% Sauvignon Blanc and 8% Semillon, one of my favourite blends. The Sauvignon Blanc was fermented cool in stainless steel tanks. The Semillon was fermented in French oak barrels and then left on the fine lees for 8 months with weekly batonnage. I really enjoy the taste when a wine like this is finally blended, the Semillon adding its gravitas to the sprightly fresh Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are then blended and prepared for bottling.

Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is an elegant black. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden straw, gem bright. The aromas are of fresh scrunch fynbos herbs, green figs. These continue on through the generous palate with a golden thread of classic Sauvignon Blanc acidity, and the ameliorating effect of the Semillon’s lanolin texture and sweet tropical lime flavours. Long gently waning aftertaste.

Pair
This is an excellent sipping wine, especially in the late afternoon. It is also a perfect wine for food. Will happily take on Oriental dishes, sushi, sashimi and fish and seafood dishes. Anina Meyer’s Mango & Rice Super Salad is an ideal lunch dish for the Zevenwacht 360 Sauvignon Blanc 2018. Make it now while the mangos are still in season.
