Klein Constantia Wines to be served at 'Mandela 100 years' Gala Celebration in Washington D.C

As a proud supporter of the Mandela 100 Years campaign, Klein Constantia is delighted that its wines will be served at the Mandela 100th Celebration Gala being held at The National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington D.C. on 27 April 2019 (Freedom Day).

The gala will be the culmination of a unified campaign that kicked off in the United States on 18 July 2018, marking the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth. The campaign has seen Mandela’s four official legacy foundations collaborate to build ongoing, sustainable support for his legacy priorities: advancing equality, social justice and the well-being of children.

Special guests at the Gala Celebration will include former US president Barack Obama, former South African first lady and Mozambican humanitarian Graça Machel, South African actor, director and playwright Dr John Kani, and his actor son, Atandwa Kani, who played the young Madiba in the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Entertainment will include a short documentary on Mandela’s legacy as well as musical performances by Beninese singer/song writer Angelique Kidjo and South African jazz singer Sibongile Khumalo.

All of the wines for the Gala Celebration have been donated by Klein Constantia, which will also be represented in person by one of its co-owners, US-Czech entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist Zdeněk Bakala, accompanied by his wife, Michaela. The Klein Constantia Méthode Cap Classique Brut will be served before dinner, followed by the Klein Constantia Sauvignon Blanc with the first course, the Estate Red Blend with the main course, and the Vin de Constance with dessert or cheese.

It is a confirmed fact that the virtually teetotal Mandela preferred sweet wines – and Vin de Constance in particular – on the very rare occasions that he drank wine. However, for Klein Constantia managing director Hans Astrom, there is a more meaningful connection.

“Madiba had such significance for the transformation of the modern South Africa, while Vin de Constance has been linked to changing dynamics in South Africa for centuries. As we celebrate the first 100 years of Madiba, we look forward to the next 100, which we believe look very promising for our beautiful country.”

Mandela’s four official legacy foundations are the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund, the Nelson Mandela’s Children Hospital, and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation.

Should you wish to raise a toast to Mandela’s legacy on Freedom Day, the ex-cellar prices of the wines being served at the Gala Celebration are: Klein Constantia Méthode Cap Classique Brut R250, Klein Constantia Sauvignon Blanc R150, Klein Constantia Estate Red R315, and the Vin de Constance R1095.
