Maties Rugby Club posted about his achievement in a Facebook post published on Wednesday, 3 April 2019, stating “He is honoured for his pursuit of excellence in the development of technology and management in the South African wine industry, and in the crafting of fine South African wines; and for his generosity of spirit through his selfless dedication to knowledge transfer and engaged citizenship to improve the working and living conditions of farm workers.”
Jan has been a known trailblazer in the wine industry in South Africa. Jan began his venture into the wine industry at Stellenbosch University, where he obtained his BScAgric degree, majoring in Oenology/Viticulture and Chemistry in 1968.
