Landskroon
Landskroon Wine Estate sits comfortably under the massive granite rocks of Paarl Mountain facing the south west.

On the southern horizon, you can see Table Mountain in the misty distance. On the left is the western side of the Simonsberg, another well-known winelands mountain. Farmed and managed by the de Villiers Family, the children of Paul and Hugo de Villiers. Paul, now the family patriarch is the fifth generation Paul to make wines on Landskroon. Home of the Landskroon Unwooded Chardonnay 2018 and any number of wines, the family gained recognition in previous generations as makers of Port style wines for which the current Paul won The Diner’s Club Winemaker of the Year Award.

Chardonnay in the hands of the harvester
The grapes for the Landskroon Unwooded Chardonnay 2018 are harvested in the early morning to trap as much aroma, flavour and other essentials as possible. After destalking and crushing, the grapes were pressed and the juice allowed to cool, clear settle and then the fermentation takes place. After a period of lying on the lees, the wine is prepared for bottling.

Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed under screw cap. The label, designed by Anthony Lane, is minimalist and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden straw. The aromas are classic mature Chardonnay whiffs. A combination of citrus, melon and the creamy flavour of mango. There is a lovely thread of acidity running through the wine from entry, through the generous mid palate and into the log and gently waning dry finishing aftertaste. Lovely glass.

Pair
Not a quaffer, more a sipper as a mid-morning refresher or at sun down. It is a lovely late summer food wine. Meeta K Woolf is a friend and food writer, recipe developer, photography teacher and and and. Meeta K Wolff’s Green Asparagus Chicken Caesar Salad with Honeyed Pecan Nuts is a perfect match for the Landskroon UnWooded Chardonnay 2018. Click HERE for her recipe.
