Avontuur Estate
Avontuur Estate winemaker Jan van Rooyen sums up the harvest to date in one short sentence: normal and a bit peculiar!
2019 harvest an unusual one!
"In general there are no complaints from our side about the state of the grapes. They are good quality without any pests or fungi and there were no specific upsets. But then you suddenly have a substantially lower yield on the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir ripened before any of the whites whilst producing a higher yield than last year, which was a little different from past vintages.”

With the completion of the white grape harvest on 21 February, which is quite a bit earlier than last year’s 2ndof March end date, there are a few weird and wonderful tweaks to this year’s harvest, but nothing which particularly worries van Rooyen.

Taste fresh grapes in the tasting room.
One of the fun things we always offer during the harvest is fresh grapes of the day, which is available for tasting! It is quite incredible how much of the eventual wine you can already taste in the grape varietal itself. Do yourself a favour and give it a try whilst harvest is on.

Tasting Room Special.
We believed that the newly released Single Vineyard Pinotage 2017 can age - and age well! So a great idea  to grab 6-bottle box right now for only R990 instead of the usual R1110 and drinking a few, whilst cellaring the rest to keep. Only tasting room from 1 - 31 March.

New Cabernet Sauvignon Released.
If you're a fan of Helderberg Cabernet Sauvignon, this 2016 vintage will offer everything you want! Visit the tasting room and try it soon.

National Yearling Sale planning nearly complete!
Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm will be sending 18 yearlings up to Gauteng for the annual National Yearling Sale which takes place on 24, 25 and 26 April at Gosforth Park as usual. The yearlings and crew will leave on 14 April and should be properly installed in C-block and ready for visitors a few days later.

Var & Oratorio tops on the sire's lists.
Our stallions continuing their winning steaks with Var currently in the top 3 on the General Sire's list and Oratorio holding his own as no I on artificial going. We recently had a nice win by 4 year old Avontuur-bred Jetorio who is by Oratorio ot of River Jetez, which was a fantastic achievement. As one of South Africa's all-time champion race mares, it's good to see her offspring show the same magic.

Dinner Continue.
