They were only one of two cellars in the Elgin Wine Valley to be awarded Top 20 White Wine Cellar. This prestigious honour is awarded to South Africa’s most successful white wine producers over the past 10 years.
In addition to being named as one of SA’s top producers, three of their wines also shone in their relevant categories. The Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay 2017 was listed as one of the Top SA Chardonnays, the Paul Cluver Sauvignon Blanc 2018 also earned a spot on the list of the Top SA Sauvignon Blancs. The Paul Cluver Gewürztraminer 2016, Riesling 2017 and Riesling Dry Encounter 2016 were also listed as one of the Top SA Niche White Varieties. Known for producing superb Pinot Noir, their Estate Pinot Noir 2017 and Seven Flags Pinot Noir 2016 each secured a spot on the list of Top SA Pinot Noirs. The Estate Chardonnay 2017, Seven Flags Pinot Noir 2017 and Riesling Noble Late Harvest 2017 were each recognised as one of the Top 100 wines. The Riesling Noble Late Harvest and Estate Chardonnay were also recognised with a place in the Classification’s Top Wine SA Hall of Fame for 2019.
To be eligible for the Classification, which has been updated annually since 2004, wines of the Cape must have earned very good to excellent reviews from at least one of the top judging panels for at least three vintages during the 10-year period under review. The period reviewed falls between the years 2009 and 2018 (inclusive) for the 2019 Classification. The critics include experts appointed for the Decanter World Wine Awards (UK), the International Wine Challenge (UK) and IWSC (UK), Platter’s SA Wine Guide (5 Stars and Highly Recommended), the Six Nations Wine Challenge (AU), the Trophy Wine Show (SA), the Veritas Awards (SA) and the Michelangelo awards (SA) – to mention just some of the panels.
