Johann de Wet, CEO of De Wetshof Estate in Robertson, has been announced as Agri Western Cape’s Young Farmer of the Year for 2018. This brings him into contention for the national title, to be awarded later this year.

Speaking via Skype from Texas where he is on wine marketing business, De Wet said this award is a tremendous honour for any young farmer as well as recognition for the South African wine industry’s pivotal role in the country’s agriculture landscape. “For me personally and for the whole De Wetshof team it is a huge accolade and I would like to thank Agri Western Cape and the sponsors for this award,” he said.

Mr Carl Opperman, CEO of Agri Western Cape says that candidates for Young Farmer of the Year are judged on diverse criteria including record-keeping, financial control, production methods, marketing, conserving of natural resources, labour practices and risk control. “This allows the candidates to measure their own competitiveness and sustainability against each other.

“For Agri Western Cape it is an asset dynamic young farmers like these in our structures,” he said. “The future of agriculture in the Western Cape is in good hands. We’d like to congratulate Johann and wish him all the best for the national competition.”
