Eikendal Vineyards
For Eikendal Vineyards and Cellar Master, Nico Grobler, 2017 has been a stellar year, achieving more success than most winemakers and producers hope to achieve in a decade. Grobler’s vision, perfectionism, attention to detail and revolutionary approach to grape growing and vineyard management have culminated in the extraordinary wines that caught the attention of judges and opinion formers.

“Our focus these last few years was to unlock the Eikendal terroir, therefore the winery’s 2017 achievements come as no surprise. It takes a great piece of land, influences from False Bay, dedicated people and lots of passion to achieve great things. Eikendal has it all and even more than that, Eikendal has a massive heartbeat! I am proud of our land and our team. This is only the start,” shares a super stoked Grobler.

Celebrate this festive season with a Christmas & Wine Experience

It’s the Festive Season and the air is filled with holiday anticipation, Boney M, year-end parties, Nativity plays … and the sweet and spicy smells of baked delights. Eikendal is bringing the flavours of Christmas to our Tasting Centre with the uniquely delightful Christmas & Wine Pairing.

Expect a truly German cookie treat, Lebkuchen, with its nuances of honey, spices and cloves, covered in a thin layer of icing dancing round the Christmas tree with the Pinotage 2016, which adds flavours of red and black cherries. The Charisma 2016, a blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese, and the traditional fruit Mince Pies envelope revellers in a sensory explosion with the rich, sticky, sweet fruits wrapped in a buttery pastry. Just when you thought there is an end to this decadent pairing, the bold and juicy Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 steps up to join a traditional, South African Christmas cake, straight from your grandmother’s recipe book.

The Eikendal Christmas & Wine Pairing will keep visitors in the holiday spirit from 1 to 31 December, Tuesdays to Sundays between 10:00 and 16:30. The Eikendal family pays homage to Hansjürg Saager

On the 18th of July this year, our beloved co-owner, Hansjürg Saager, passed away at the age of 77. For all the time since the Saager Family acquired Eikendal, he was actively involved in the business and always had the well-being of Eikendal and its staff at heart. Accordingly, he was well-known to and well-liked by all members of the Eikendal family – and will be sorely missed.

Hansjürg’s widow, Francesca Saager, visited Eikendal recently and treated the Eikendal family to a lovely dinner, both to celebrate Hansjürg’s life and to give thanks to the team that ensures that Eikendal remains one of the leading wine producers in South Africa. At the dinner, Dora (being a senior person by now and having known and worked for the Saager Family since she was a girl) made a speech about Hansjürg, followed by prayers. All participants thoroughly enjoyed the treat and spent a great time together, well in the spirit of Hansjürg, who stood for honesty, hard work, fairness and thoroughness but also was a loving and generous person who understood to celebrate an occasion.
