Lourensford Estate
The past year has presented Lourensford Estate with a rich yield of international recognition and awards, including the Lourensford MCC Brut 2011 bringing home the Golden Oldie Trophy for the best “Museum Class” wine at the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards.

Another of the Estate’s bubblies to excel was the Lourensford MCC Cuvée 89 2007, scoring 92 points in the respected Tim Atkin South Africa 2017 Special Report.

While Neil Pendock, writing in The Times, gave the Lourensford MCC Cuvée 89 2007 a 5 star rating in a piece titled Nectar of the gods comes in a limited edition: “Remarkably fresh and apricot fruited, the bubble is as frenetic as you’d expect from a genie bottled up for a decade, throwing some spectacular shapes on your tongue and ricocheting off your soft palate like a skater boi on steroids.”

“This recognition for our older vintage MCCs illustrates very clearly that these sparkling wines have tremendous ageing potential,” says Lourensford’s cellar master Hannes Nel.

The MCCs also sparkled at the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge 2017 with Gold for the Lourensford Brut Blanc 2011 and Bronze in Museum Class for the Lourensford Cuvee 89.

The Lourensford Limited Release Chardonnay 2016 and the Lourensford Limited Release SMV 2015 also shone at the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards, being presented with Double Gold medals by the panel of 28 judges drawn from 23 countries.

The Tim Atkin South Africa 2017 Special Report also scored the following wines in the prestigious 90+ category: the Lourensford Limited Release SMV 2015 (93 pts), Lourensford Limited Release Viognier 2016 (91 pts) and the Lourensford Limited Release White Blend 2015 (90 pts).

Wines from the Estate in Somerset West also shone at the annual International Wine and Spirit Competition’s (IWSC) Awards in London.

The highly respected competition received entries from nearly 90 countries and the following wines were recognised for their quality: Lourensford Limited Release Chardonnay 2016 (Silver Outstanding), Lourensford Limited Release Viognier 2015 (Silver Outstanding), Lourensford Limited Release Reserve Red 2014 (Silver), Lourensford The Dome Chardonnay 2015 (Silver) and the Lourensford Limited Release Merlot 2015 (Bronze).

Lourensford was also one of the top performers at the Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards, with a trio of wines judged the best South Africa has to offer in their categories: Top Merlot Lourensford Limited Release Merlot 2015; Top Viognier Lourensford Limited Release Viognier 2016; Top Natural Sweet Lourensford Ltd Release Noble Late Harvest 2014 which received the highest average score of any wine entered in the competition.

“We are incredibly proud of Hannes Nel and the cellar team's achievements,” says Koos Jordaan, GM of Lourensford Estate. “They have exhibited excellence across a variety of prestigious competitions, winning accolades for our white, red and sparkling wines.”
