Boschendal Estate

Boschendal Farm is the perfect destination in one. As the Guide Michelin would say, ‘well worth the journey.’ There is just so much to do to fill your time in a single day. Just remember to take a large shopping basket with you, you will want to fill it with all sorts of delicious produce sold both in the Farm Deli and the wine sales point.

The Boschendal Manor House is iconic in the Groot Drakenstein Valley. Restoration Architects Gwen and Gawie Fagan wrote ‘Of all the stately farmstead in the Drakenstein Valley, Boschendal has the finest setting.’ This impressive Manor House was built in 1812, the year Napoleon marched on Moscow, by Paul de Villiers for his bride Anna Susanna Louw.

With the interiors recently restored Boschendal has moved from being a museum to a vibrant working Manor House where wine tastings now take place for groups and VIPs. Wine Sales also take place there. Wine Tastings and Sales also take place at Rhone, of which the Manor House is slightly older than Boschendal.

The Farm Deli & Shop offers a range of farm produce, both from the Werf Vegetable Garden and the Estate’s Bakery. You can sit out under the majestic oaks and have breakfast, coffees, teas or lunch.

The Werf Restaurant is a gem where Christiaan Campbell and his team provide the most fabulous and at times quirky [yet delicious] desserts.

There are Werf Picnics served at Boschendal.

Don’t miss the two fabulous rose gardens, one at the Manor House which has a fabulous collection of old fashioned roses and the Rhone garden which has been recently created by Horticulturist Jan Blok.

While at Rhone, you have the perfect opportunity to taste and buy the sublime Boschendal Wines.

There are constantly new things happening, courses, yoga weekends, biking weekends. You can stay over in the fabulous accommodation on offer. During January, there is an offer for accommodation in the Orchard Cottages. I have stayed there, the accommodation is so comfortable and the peace at night is counterpointed by the dawn chorus of such joy. Lovely breakfasts are brought in baskets in the morning. Take your bike and go for a ride, or a pair of walkers and enjoy the outdoors.
