Landskroon Wine Estate on the south-western slopes of the Paarl Mountain is owned and a managed by a group of de Villiers cousins. The beautiful Paarl Rocks on the mountain above were named thus as they look like pearls after rain. Cellarmaster Paul de Villiers makes two Landskroon Chenin Blancs, a dry and an off dry.

The wines are made in exactly the same way. For the Landskroon Chenin Blanc Dry 2017, after destemming and gentle crushing, the free run and light pressings juice was settled for 48 hours before being taken to fermentation tanks and fermented dry at 12C.

The wine is then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled under screw cap in a Bordeaux shaped bottle with the elegant Anthony Lane designed label. In the glass, it is a pale golden straw colour with green flashes.

It smells like
Tropical and sub tropical fruits. Guava, white fleshed peaches and white flowers.

It tastes like
A fine line of bright fruited green apple acidity runs through from entry to exit. Full round flavours of ripe white fleshed peaches and piel de sapo melon.

It’s good with
Well chilled it is a perfect mid-morning or early evening refresher. Chenin Blanc is a perfect match with Oriental dishes, chicken or pork with sweet and sour sauce, or a gentle Kerala Curry. Tracy Foulkes’s Fresh Pea Pesto & Ricotta Bruschetta is the perfect snack accompaniment for both of these wines. Click here for her recipe.

Similar passage through the cellar, though cold fermented at 13C.  The fermentation process is stopped at the point where the residual sugar content is at the perfect balancing point with the fruit and the acidity.

The looks and the aromas are very similar to the dryer version, however the flavour is fruitier, yellow apples with note of honeysuckle. Enjoyed by for people who like a dry wine too!
