Boplaas Family Vineyards
An incredible year of results for the small family run cellar in the heart of the Klein Karoo, Boplaas Family Vineyards was topped off with the inclusion of the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2010 & the Boplaas Show Reserve Cape Tawny Port in the Top 6 of the newly re-launch Classic Wine magazine.

An incredible run of competition results in 2013 for Boplaas, the small family cellar nestled in the sleepy Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, was capped off by the inclusion of the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 and the Boplaas Show Reserve Cape Tawny Port N/V in the Classic Wine publications Top 6 “port” tasting. Boplaas was the only producer who managed to have two fine Cape fortifieds included in the Top 6.

Rated 4 ½ Stars the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2010 also garnered double gold at Veritas 2013 and was crowned best Cape Vintage at the Cape Port Producers Association (CAPPA) Challenge 2013. This true Vintage styled wine was crafted according to traditional methods utilizing a trio of Portuguese varietals and highlights the craftsmanship and sheer quality of these wines in the Cape. An immensely dark wine with layers upon layers of macerated hedgerow fruits, black plum and spice all cloistered in impenetrable tannins destines this wine for decades of bottle maturation and enjoyment – if cellared correctly. Best accompanied by hearty rustic fare – beef Wellington, grilled loin of venison, lamb Tagine; fine charcuterie and a selection of mature cheese, nuts, fruit preserves, dark chocolate or simply enjoy on its own.

Crafting a fine Cape Tawny requires utmost skill and the willingness to allow time and nature to take its course – as the final blend maybe composed of Tawnies which aged for a minimum of a decade in barrel. Cellar master Carel Nel utilizes his 35 years of wine making experience and the knowledge garnered by his numerous visits to the top Port houses in the assembling of the Boplaas Cape Tawny “Ports”.

The 4 Star awarded Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V crafted from Tinta Barocca displays the characteristic tawny colour brimming with walnut, pecan caramel, toffee, bright wood spice and wisps of Demerara sugar. The Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V was crowned the top “Port” at the 29th SAA Wine Awards and will be served aboard all SAA Premium Class flights in 2014.

An ideal after dinner accompaniment to mature cheeses, dried fruits and dark chocolate, this fine Cape Tawny also pairs perfectly with roast duck, slow roasted pork belly, mild Cape Malay dishes and Cantonese dishes. Contrary to popular belief, the Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V should be enjoyed lightly chilled especially in warmer climes or summertime.

This year Boplaas garnered the SA Champion Port Trophy at the SA National Young Wine Show 2013; won 6 double gold and 5 gold medals at Veritas 2013 and were the best private cellar at the show; won “Best in Show” at the CAPPA Challenge 2013 and had three wines included in the CAPPA Top 10, and the Boplaas Potstill 20 Years Brandy garnered one of only seven 5 Star ratings from Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2014.

These award winning wines, as well as our entire range of sparkling, table, Cape fortifieds and fine brandies are available for tasting from our cellar door in Calitzdorp, as well as the Cool Bay tasting room in Great Brak River.
