Swartland is an hour’s drive to the north of Cape Town, and is an exciting up-and-coming wine region
2012 Tesco Finest Swartland Chenin £6.99, Tesco

Swartland is an hour’s drive to the north of Cape Town, and its grapes used to go into bulk wine or brandy production. Now it is one of the world’s most exciting regions. A wealth of old vines – rare in South Africa – can turn out fleshy, interesting wines such as this, even at this humble price.

2009 The Liberator ‘This Bird Has Flown’ £11.95, Wine Society

If you buy only one of my white recommendations in 2013, this should be it. I would happily pay double for this staggering white. A blend of chenin blanc, viognier, chardonnay and clairette, it is a rich (and as such demanding of food), savoury, nuanced wine that keeps you coming back for more.
