The
annual awards celebrate and reward winemakers whose wines have been chosen by
the Club’s 10 independent panellists in the past year. The Wine-of-the-Month
Club selects hundreds of wines, of different types and styles, each year—all of
which are assessed blind by the panel—and delivers them to its members, in
different wine programmes.
The Lanzerac Merlot 2010 was chosen by the club’s panel of
independent and esteemed industry judges as the Best Merlot of the Year (of 160
wines tasted), whilst the Lanzerac Pinotage 2010 was chosen as the Reserve
Club Pinotage out of 20 wines tasted.
The
Merlot 2010 reflects a deep red colour with hints of red berries and cocoa. On
the nose flavours of chocolate, dark berries, pencil shavings, slight cigar box
and vanilla, plums and blackberry are prominent. On the palate the wine shows a
good balance tannin structure, rich body, with fruit and lingering on the
aftertaste. Enjoy with duck, venison, casseroles or mature cheeses. Available from
select retail outlets nationwide the wine retails for approximately R105 per
bottle.
The
Pinotage 2010 has an excellent deep colour, with ripe berries and plums on the
nose and palate, with a good mouth-feel and lingering aftertaste. With five to ten years maturation it will
start to acquire the velvet density and luxurious chocolate and caramel
flavours of its very early Lanzerac predecessors. Described as a full-bodied,
complex wine with a beautiful fruit/wood balance and a good tannin structure allowing
it to age well. Available from select retail outlets nationwide at R115 per
bottle, this is the wine perfect wine to enjoy with Malay curries, bobotie or venison
‘We
are thrilled by this latest recognition as our hard work and team work is
reaping the rewards, reaffirming ourselves as an estate known for producing
excellent red wines,’ says winemaker Wynand Lategan.
