Boplaas’s stellar performances at both Veritas and the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction 2013, were fine reward for this family run cellar’s patience, passion, perseverance and heritage of crafting fine wine and brandy.

The maiden release Boplaas 15 Year Reserve Brandy garnered one of only seven double gold medals awarded at South Africa’s largest & longest running blind-tasted wine competition; while the Boplaas Ox Wagon 1880 Auction Reserve Potstill Brandy attracted rave critical review, feverish bidding and eventually sold for an impressive average of R7416 per case.

The maiden release Boplaas 15 Year Reserve Brandy garnered one of only seven double gold medals awarded at South Africa’s largest & longest running blind-tasted wine competition; while the Boplaas Ox Wagon 1880 Auction Reserve Potstill Brandy attracted rave critical review, feverish bidding and eventually sold for an impressive average of R7416 per case.

Having first exported brandy to London in 1880, Boplaas was one of the first private cellars to craft and bottle potstill brandy in the Cape after amendments to the law in 1991. For Boplaas patriarch Oupa Danie Nel it was a source of great pride to craft the best possible brandy from his Calitzdorp Colombard, a tradition continued by cellar master Carel Nel.

Glistening amber gold, brimming with a complex bouquet of peach blossom, dried apricot, tangerine, honey, roast almond, sweet wood spice, a mouth coating beeswax-like palate with lengthy finish and warming spirit lilt characterise the Boplaas 15 Year Reserve. This fine Boplaas brandy - as all those bottled by Boplaas - was hand-crafted in small batches & aged in Limousin barrique. Due to Calitzdorp’s arid climes almost a third of the spirit is “lost to the angels” resulting in a concentrated and exceptionally smooth spirit.

Commemorating the first Boplaas export brandy’s arduous journey by ox wagon from Calitzdorp to Cape Town, the 1880 Ox Wagon Reserve Potstill Brandy is a barrel blend of 8 year aged potstill brandy assembled by Carel Nel especially for the Auction. Christian Eedes rated this fine brandy 94/100 noting its “Very fragrant with notes of citrus, peach, apricot and potpourri” bouquet; while Miguel Chan –group sommelier of the Tsogo Sun Hotel group – was suitably impressed by this brandy’s complexity, elegance and depth rating it an impressive 96/100.

The double gold award winning Boplaas 15 Year Reserve - a 1000 were hand-crafted and bottled - is available from the Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp & the Cool Bay tasting room in Groot Brak at R390 per bottle.

As for the Boplaas Ox Wagon 1880 Auction Reserve Potstill Brandy, the entire 25 case allocation was purchased by private buyers, amongst them Alan Pick of the Butcher’s Shop & Grill. The annual CWG Auction is open to any member of the public.
