Beaumont
Newsletter – Spring 2013
Water
water everywhere…
As
I sit down to write our Spring newsletter, the rain continues to fall in the
already soaked Bot River valley. Our dams are full and the vines have been
given a life-giving liquid-drenched soil to kick start their journey to fruit
bearing.
With
August having delivered the highest recorded rainfall in our 39 year history
and the snow covered mountains ensuring that the temperatures dropped low
enough in the valley, the vines have been put into a deep slumber. As with a hibernating bear, a deep sleep uses
fewer resources and ensures that, come spring and some timely warmth, the
reserves are enough to enable a lively start to the new growing season. This is all good news for us and bodes well
for our 2014 vintage.
Talking
the talk…
We
are thrilled by the wonderful reviews our wines have been receiving from some
of the industry heavy weights. Matthew
Jukes, acclaimed and much-respected UK wine writer, recently waxed lyrical
about our 2012 Hope Marguerite and was once again full of praise for the Goutte
d’Or dessert wine. Read more about what
Matthew thought at http://tinyurl.com/pc4px7f.
Jancis
Robinson recently reviewed our wines for her premium “Purple Pages” and we were
delighted to read that such a respected and skilled taster and wine writer saw
fit to rate our wines so highly. She
referred to the 2011 Beaumont Pinotage as “one of the most appealing Pinotages
I have ever tasted” – and she has tasted just about all of them!
5
star wines on a Platter…
The
bible of SA wine, “Platter’s South African Wines” is currently in the throws of
finalizing their list of 5 star-rated wines for the 2014 edition and we have
wines in the running yet again. One of the
key tenants of our philosophy is that of consistency. The fact that this is the 6th
vintage in a row from which one or more of our wines have received a nomination
for the coveted score is testament to us successfully delivering consistently
good wines. So fingers crossed everyone
and watch this space, here’s hoping that 2012 joins 2008, 2010 and 2011 in
being award the 5 stars.
Events
to take note of…
The
Bot River Barrel Race returns to our town’s streets on the 26th of
October this year and should once again prove to be a wonderful family day
out. Not only are barrels raced
precariously around the town, but there is also a fun run and a mountain bike
race for those who prefer a little more convention to their sports. Whatever your vice, the day promised to be
one full of friendly fun so be sure to pop it in your diary now. See www.botriverwines.com for more details.
The
Elgin Open Gardens is happening again this year and we join in the celebrations
by opening our garden to all those who love to relax in gorgeous surroundings
on the weekends of the 2nd & 3rd and 9th
& 10th of November. Join
us in our free-flowing country garden on the lawns over-looking the willow
edged dam for brunch, lunch or high tea – all catered for by the very talented
Zest Catering team. You can also use the opportunity to visit our fantastic
water mill and see it in full operation.

NKOTB
With
news that the “Spice Girls” are destined to return, we offer up some new kids
on the block to help soften the blow. The 2013 Beaumont Chenin Blanc is
available now and promises to be the wine to refresh and recharge with this
summer – our “Sporty Spice” if you will.
For
an equally pleasant summer quaffer, we have our 2013 Raoul’s Rosé pinking up
the picnic. The base for this rosé is a
grape traditionally associated with port production, Tinta Barocca, and the
resultant wine delivers a wonderfully light, fresh and fruit-driven summer
drink with a beautiful blush colour that might even get a smile out of “Posh
Spice”!
Jancis
Robinson’s favorite Pinotage is now into the 2012 vintage and offers the same
elegance as the 2011 vintage that we were all so very pleased with – a cool
climate classic.
