Simonsig triumph at 2013 Méthode Cap Classique Challenge

Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel, South Africa’s first Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), has triumphed as the Best Museum Class MCC at the 2013 Amorim Tsogo Sun Méthode Cap Classique Challenge for the 2007 vintage.
“We have set the benchmark right from the start when my father, Frans Malan, created South Africa’s very first Cap Classique, Kaapse Vonkel, more than four decades ago and we will continue to contribute towards the growing interest in Cap Classiques amongst producers as well as the public,” says Simonsig cellarmaster Johan Malan.

In addition to being the country’s first sparkling wine made according to the French tradition of secondary bottle fermentation, Kaapse Vonkel also became the first Cap Classique to use all three of the traditional grape varieties used in Champagne when Pinot Meunier was introduced in 1997.

Described as the ‘perennial star’ of the Amorim Tsogo Sun Cap Classique Challenge, Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel 2007 captivates with a lively, energetic mousse rising to the surface emitting the wonderful aromas of red berries intertwined with sweet baked apple and a delicious yeasty, sour dough complexity. The refined creaminess of the mousse will refresh the palate and enhances the zesty citrus and unmistakable flavours of freshly baked bread.
