Lanzerac Estate, situated in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands, took home gold for its 2010 Pionier Pinotage at the annual Michelangelo International Wine Awards, which took place on Friday, 6 September.

A panel of 16 wine and brandy specialists from 15 countries judged this year’s entries which took place from the 12th to the 17th of August at Romond Vineyards in Somerset West. Since the competition's inception more than 160 international wine experts from 37 countries have served on the judging panels.

‘This latest accolade reaffirms our mission to produce wines of an international calibre. Since the release of our maiden vintage in 2004 the Pionier Pinotage has become an award-winning wine for the estate, being acknowledged by the industry at various local competitions,’ says winemaker Wynand Lategan.

The Lanzerac Pionier Pinotage is a tribute to the first world’s first bottled Pinotage – a 1959 Lanzerac Pinotage. The wine spent 18 months in barrel after which three barrels were hand-selected="true"="true" and blended. The 2010 Pionier has an excellent deep colour, displaying typical varietal aromas, such as ripe, plumy red fruits, on the nose. A big mouth-feel, with a complex and velvety palate, and a long and lingering aftertaste rounds of this wine. With five to ten years’ maturation it will start to acquire the velvet density and luxurious chocolate and caramel flavours for which its predecessors are known. Available directly from the Tasting Room at R280 per bottle.
