Stellenbosch,
South Africa – August 30th, 2013, the ABSA top 10 Pinotages are announced at
the annual luncheon held by ABSA and the Pinotage Association.
The ABSA competiton
is held every year to promote the best of South Africa’s indigenous cultivar. Springfontein
Wine Estate’s Single Vineyard Jonathan’s Ridge Pinotage, joins nine other wineries
receiving this award.
Created in 1925 by Abraham Isak Perold, the first viticulture professor of the University of Stellenbosch, Pinotage it is widely knows as a difficult cultivar, but has gained international popularity over the past decade. Lovingly called “The South African Naughty Boy”, Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (Hermitage). “Our maritime soil structure and climate offer a completely different take on Pinotage.” Says Springfontein’s Zimbabwean General Manager and Winemaker Tariro Masayiti.
Established 1994, surrounded by 400 hectares of fynbos
close to the cool waters of Walker Bay, Springfontein’s 25 ha of vineyards are
planted in maritime, limestone soils, and irrigated by a natural spring.
This unique terroir is reflected in the estate’s
hand-crafted wines. The flagships – unfiltered single vineyard Chenin Blanc and
Pinotage – will be featured in “Springfontein Eats”, the restaurant run by German
Michelin Star Chef, Jürgen Schnieder and his wife Susanne Schneider, opening in
early October 2013 on the Estate.
