Boplaas Family Vineyards
Boplaas Family Vineyards, the family winery nestled in the Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, received four nominations in the 2014 Best Value Wine Guide sponsored by Ultra Liquors. The Boplaas Shiraz 2012, Boplaas Muscadel 2013, Boplaas Hannepoot 2013 & the Boplaas Cape Ruby N/V made the cut from the 931 entries submitted.

Boplaas Family Vineyards in Calitzdorp have always prided themselves on crafting wines that offer consumers the best value, a taste of the Cape’s winelands and moreover a true taste of unique terroir of the Klein Karoo where they’ve been farming since the mid 1800’s.  To this end, Boplaas are pleased to announce that four wines were amongst the 472 wines rated 2 ½ Stars or more and selling below R80 per bottle included in the guide from 931 entries received.

The Klein Karoo has always been renowned as an area for excellent Muscat fortifieds and this is continued by the Boplaas Muscadel 2013 & Boplaas Hannepoot 2013’s inclusion into the guide – a total of 5 Calitzdorp Muscats were included in the guide.  Both the Muscadel and Hannepoot were crafted according to traditional methods from hand-harvested fruit from vines ranging in age from 10 to 34 years.  The Muscadel 2013 (3 Stars) & Hannepoot 2013 (2 ½ Stars) are available from the cellar door at R48 per bottle, will both reward cellaring over the next half decade and are the ideal accompaniments to spicy cuisine, fine cheeses or simply sipped on their own as dessert.

Crafting Cape fortifieds utilizing Port varietals and according to traditional Portuguese methods is what Calitzdorp has become synonymous for and the Boplaas Cape Ruby N/V offers consumers the chance to experience top class “Port” at under R60 per bottle.  The 3 ½ Star Boplaas Cape Ruby with its rose petal & violet aromatics, while the well balanced, rich and ripe palate accentuated by red fruits, cinnamon and cloves is available for R55 per bottle from the cellar door.

The Mediterranean & Portuguese varietals to suite the Klein Karoo’s terroir like a glove, with the Boplaas Shiraz 2012 showing a glimpse of the potential of the area.  Crafted in traditional open-fermenters or “kuipe” with manual punch downs created a wine brimming with dried herbs, fynbos, blueberries, cocoa and vanilla.  This buxom Shiraz will offer exceptional drinking pleasure over the next half-decade or so and is available from the cellar door at R50 per bottle.

These Good Value bottlings are available from leading retails country wide; while the entire range of sparkling & table wines, Cape fortifieds, Muscats, Cape potstill brandy and Family Reserve wines are available from the Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp and the Cool Bay tasting room in Great Brak River along the N2 near Mossel Bay.
