Nederburg
To celebrate Heritage Month, Nederburg in Paarl is paying homage this September to the heroes who have shaped its history.
Celebrate these personalities, and the Heritage Heroes range of gourmet wines they have inspired, and make your way to The Red Table restaurant situated in Nederburg’s historic manor house. This bistro-style restaurant will be offering a tantalising five-course menu featuring the freshest local ingredients, carefully paired with the five wines in the Heritage Heroes range, for just R195 per person.  Pre-booking is advised so contact The Red Table on 021 877 5155 or theredtable@nederburg.co.za.

Just a short walk away is the Old Cellar Museum for a captivating glimpse of the Nederburg tale, from the early days of Nederburg’s founder, Philippus Wolvaart, to his successors, including winemaking legends like Johann Graue and Günter Brözel.  It was they who developed Nederburg’s reputation as the most awarded name in South African wine.

In addition, the Nederburg Visitors’ Centre will be offering a tasting of the five wines in the Heritage Heroes collection range at R65 a head, but if you purchase six bottles or more, the tasting is free.

The five Heritage Heroes wines are individually named in honour of a personality who has played a major role in shaping the winery’s reputation. Made by current cellar master Razvan Macici, the wines are an ample demonstration of just how he and his team work to the mantra of mastering wine.

The collection includes an elegantly wooded Chenin blanc called The Anchorman after the winery’s founder, Philippus Wolvaart.  Next is the graceful Bordeaux-style blend known as The Brew Master, which pays tribute to Johann Graue, a German immigrant who bought Nederburg in 1937 and introduced far-reaching technological innovations in the cellar. Then comes the recently-launched The Beautiful Lady, a single-vineyard Gewurztraminer named for Ilse Graue, the wife of Johann. She remodelled the 1800 manor house to accommodate her Bechstein piano and to include a second storey for the bedrooms. She also brought a gracious sense of hospitality to Nederburg, planting a fine rose garden that still occupies pride of place in the garden.

Next in line is The Young Airhawk, a complex, layered Sauvignon blanc that has been wood-fermented, to honour Johann Graue’s son, Arnold who, like his father, spearheaded many progressive innovations at Nederburg. He died tragically at 29 in a light aircraft crash. The Motorcycle Marvel is a rich and bold Rhône-style red that celebrates winemaking luminary Günter Brözel, who was Nederburg’s cellar master from 1956 to 1989.

The wines are available from Nederburg in Paarl, the Vinoteque in Stellenbosch, at fine dining establishments as well as at select fine wine shops.
