Besides
being awarded Champion Red Wine, De Krans also walked away with the awards for
Champion Chardonnay, Champion Shiraz, Champion Ruby Cabernet and Reserve,
Champion Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc at the Klein Karoo Young Wine Show,
as well as being named the Reserve Champion Private Cellar at the same show.
De
Krans, already well known for its premium port wines, and last year, among
others, clinched the title of SA
Champion Port at the SA Young Wine Show , as well as being the only cellar with
to be awarded a Platter five-star award for a port in 2012, has done extremely
well throughout this year in the wine industry.
At
this year’s Southern Cape Bottled Wine Show De Krans was awarded with three
double gold medal and one gold for their ports, as well as gold for the 2010
Tempranillo and 2013 White Muscadel Jerepigo.
‘I’ve
been extremely impressed with the quality of fruit flavours and superb balance in
the 2013 Chenin Blanc and 2013 Tinta Barocca Rosé, in particular. The De Krans red wines are dark in colour, and the
Touriga Nacional has caught my attention with its intense fruit flavours of
blackberries, violet and spices,’ says De Krans winemaker, Louis van der Riet.
The
2013 Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc, also produced by De Krans, using grapes from
Waboomskraal near George in the Southern Cape, displays intense tropical fruit
flavours, and a pleasant minerality, all characteristic to the cold climate area of the area.
According
to Van der Riet De Krans’ fruity, low alcohol, semi-sweet perlé Moscato, launched towards the end
of 2012, has grown in popularity, and is the perfect wine for spring and
summer.
