Morgenster’s 2010 flagship red Bordeaux
blend was winemaker Henry Kotzé’s first for the Estate. It was made in Morgenster’s minimalistic style
which lets the fruit to do the talking and makes the wine a true reflection of
the terroir.
This was recognised at a
function on 30 July in Paarl for the 2013 Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards which named
Morgenster 2010 the Top Red Blend in the Stellenbosch District and one of the
top 5 Estate Wines in the competition.
Morgenster 2010 shows youthful vibrancy
with beautiful natural acidity. Already well integrated with complexity beyond
its years and velvety smooth fine tannins, it exhibits a pleasing grip coming
from the sturdy Schaapenberg terroir. The 2010 blend contains 48% Merlot, 25%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet franc and 7% Petit Verdot. According to Kotzé
the result is a wine to remember from an outstanding vintage and he tips it to
go beyond 20 years.
Since Morgenster believes in selling wines that have had the
benefit of ageing it has only released around 5% of the 2010 vintage. The
balance will mature and develop in the cellar before being released onto the
market after having had the benefit of ageing.
The Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards were designed to honour
the wines which truly portray South Africa's different wine growing areas. Kotzé says that the competition is a good fit
for Morgenster’s terroir driven wines, which showcase what can be achieved with
grape and ground in any given vintage.
