Back in the day port was regarded as the ‘pre or after dinner drink’, but as times have changed and the world has adjusted to a new way of thinking, it has become more acceptable to enjoy a glass of port whenever and wherever.
The De Krans Cape Ruby Port, a medium–bodied port, youthful with fruity, spicy flavours and a balanced sweetness, is the perfect example of an all rounder port. Made from the traditional Portuguese grape varieties being Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca, this popular port has been made for enjoyment on its own or as part of a summer cocktail, the latter showcasing its versatility. Taking the enjoyment of ports to a new level, winemaking team Boets and Stroebel Nel, with the assistance of mixologists created a selection of delicious port cocktails, affording port lovers the opportunity to enjoy their favourite drink throughout the year.

Two of the cocktails developed were:

Porto Urbano
Pour equal parts of De Krans Cape Ruby Port and cranberry juice into a Martini glass, and add a dash of lime cordial and some crushed ice. Garnish with orange peel and maraschino cherry.

Ruby Port Sparklers
One or two tablespoons of chocolate liqueur with chilled De Krans Cape Ruby Port in a champagne flute. Top up with some sparkling wine and garnish with a lemon-zest strip.

Not only is this a versatile port, but it has been recognised in the industry for its superb quality. Some of these accolades include receiving an outstanding 88 points by highly acclaimed wine journalist Neal Martin in the 2011 Wine Advocate Rating as well as receiving a 4-star rating in the internationally recognised Platter's South African Wine Guide, every year since 2001. Retailing for approximately R59.00 per bottle the De Krans Cape Ruby Port walked away with the title of Best Value Wine as judged by Wine Magazine for 2010, 2011 and 2012.

An excellent port to enjoy now winemaker Boets Nel recommends drinking it on its own, at room temperature, or for an ‘out of the box’ pairing marinate fresh figs in some De Krans Cape Ruby Port for about a week. Once thoroughly soaked enjoy the Port drenched figs with a combination of dark and milk Belgian chocolate for an experience of a perfect partnership.
