International celebrity chef Eric Lanlard aka ‘Cake Boy’ launched his new recipe book Chocolat and showed off his prowess at the Good Food & Wine Show in Cape Town in May – and stayed at our Colonial Heritage Suite while he was in town.
We were charmed with his tweet: ‘Perfect start to the day … beautiful sunshine, breakfast outside with the best egg Benedict ever @SteenbergHotel.’

We then celebrated ‘World Baking Day’ in style with this Master Patisseur who baked up a storm, co-hosting a decadent brunch for a group of foodie media, together with our chefs Brad Ball and Garth Almazan. Brad prepared his signature pork belly bacon to complement Garth’s famous Eggs Benedict, while Eric whipped up a batch of his chocolate hazelnut muffins for the grand finale.

Eric has worked with some of the world’s top chefs, has twice been named Continental Patisseur of the Year at the British Baking Awards and will soon become the first chef to travel to space with Virgin Galactic. Known as ‘baker to the stars’, he has baked for celebrities like Guy Ritchie and Madonna, created bespoke wedding cakes for Elizabeth Hurley and Claudia Schiffer; and was commissioned to bake the cake for the British Queen Mother’s 101st birthday which featured two Corgis wearing tiaras, no less. He also has his own television shows on Channel 4 – Glamour Puds and Baking Mad with Eric Lanlard – due to be screened for the first time in South Africa on BBC Lifestyle this month.
