This top wine walked away with the South African White Trophy, the Constantia Trophy and the South African Sauvignon Blanc Trophy. Now in its 30th year, the International Wine Challenge assesses every wine ‘blind’ and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region and vintage. Each medal winning wine is tasted on at least three separate occasions by a minimum of 10 different judges – some of the world’s leading wine experts. “We are very excited about the IWC trophies for our Sauvignon Blanc,” says Boela Gerber, Winemaker for Groot Constantia. “The Constantia Valley has always produced beautiful Sauvignons and we put a lot of effort into these vineyards. It is great to repeat these awards (Best SA Sauvignon and Best SA white) which we also won at IWC a few years ago, confirming the consistency in quality and style in the Groot Constantia wines.” “In fact, South African wines in general excelled at this year’s challenge, with 14 gold medals being won by local white wines – proving that SA’s climate is perfect for producing world class, award winning white wines.” Charles Metcalfe, the Co-Chairman of the IWC, was quoted as saying that “the South African Gold medal wines at this year’s International Wine Challenge have been stunning. South African winemakers seem to have a gift for producing top quality white wines – you might say they have the Midas touch.” This success for Groot Constantia follows hot on the heels of five gold medals won collectively at the recent Monde Selection in Brussels and the International Wine Challenge in London, and the selection of four of Groot Constantia’s wines as the 2013 Top 100 SA Wines competition. Collectively, Groot Constantia’s wines have scooped a total of 11 gold medals and three trophy’s since October of last year. “History tends to repeat itself,” says Jean Naudé, General Manager of Groot Constantia.
