Wine lovers should be stocking their cellars with 2012 Sauvignon Blanc after nine of the wines from this vintage, including the Boschendal Reserve Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2012, excelled at South Africa’s Top 100 Wines Challenge.
This came as no surprise to Boschendal white wine maker Lizelle Gerber, who said the conditions under which the 2012 vintage developed, enabled producers with cooler climate vineyards and quality viticulture practices to rise above the rest.

“Our Sauvignon Blanc 2012 is made from Boschendal’s cooler climate vineyards, so the wine was really made in the vineyards and our job was simply to nurture and protect what we had been given,” Gerber said.

“This is a spectacular wine, with concentrated fruit, good balance and great length. It will definitely tantalize your taste buds for at least the next five years. Enjoy!”

Boschendal Wines places a special focus on Sauvignon Blanc and the award reinforces the winery’s belief that it is capable of producing top quality wines with this varietal. “Our belief is that we are ‘good with Sauvignon Blanc’ - we like to work with it and we have great soils, vineyards and styles,” said Jacques Roux, marketing director for DGB, the parent company of Boschendal Wines.

The Top 100 awards attracted record entry levels in 2013 with 440 of South Africa’s top wines entered and judging chairman Tim Atkin MW praising the selection for 2013 as “the best yet”.

Gerber was delighted with the Top 100 listing: “Creating our wines entails hard work, enthusiasm and passion from our whole team, and a reward like this acknowledges all of this and motivates everybody to always strive for the best.”

Roux said Boschendal entered the Top 100 Challenge because it is a comprehensive, all-encompassing competition. “There is also a strong international panel, which I believe is always a good test of where one stands.”
