Regarded locally and internationally as one of South Africa’s leading port producers, De Krans Wine Cellar had an exceptional year, raking in numerous locally and internationally recognised accolades.
These included:

The award for SA Champion Port at the 2012 SA Young Wine Show. More than 2 100 wines competed in this prestigious competition where 17 wines earned the title of Champion Wine. The winning port was produced from Touriga Nacional grapes and will undergo further barrel maturation until early in 2014 when it will be ready for bottling. A slow ripening process resulted in beautiful violet and chocolate flavours with a firm tannin structure ensuring that the port will age beautifully. In 2011 De Krans was awarded the SA Champion Muscadel Trophy at the same wine show.

De Krans The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 was awarded a 5-star rating in the latest issue of the authoritative and internationally recognized 2013 Platters South African Wine Guide, currently available in most retail outlets and book stores. This is the eighth consecutive year that De Krans has been awarded a 5-star rating for its port wines. What makes this award so much more significant is that the 2010 vintage will be the last Cape Vintage Reserve with the word ‘Port’ on the label as this was bottled and labelled towards the end of last year just prior to the deadline of 31 December 2011 agreed by our government and the EU on using the word ‘Port’.

De Krans continued its winning streak with the De Krans Espresso awarded the RX South Africa Trophy for the Most Innovative Wine in 2012, at the 2012 Michelangelo International Wine Awards. This unique wine has a deep ruby red colour with pleasant aromas of freshly ground coffee and dark berry fruit. It has a solid structure with a lingering, aromatic finish. This is the perfect ‘dessert’ to end off a delicious meal with good friends.

De Krans took part in the Terroir Wine Awards for the first time this year, and walked away with the prestigious Top SA Port Award for our Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2008! The competition honours the wines which accurately portray South Africa’s different wine growing areas. All entries must be a certified Wine of Origin from a specific single vineyard, estate, ward or small district not divided into wards.

The title of Champion Cellar was once again awarded to De Krans at the annual Klein Karoo Bottled Wine Show, for the 5th consecutive year! The Overall Champion for the Klein Karoo region at the 2012 Young Wine was also awarded to De Krans (as last year for our White Muscadel), this time for a port.

This year their Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2009 was awarded the Best Vintage/Vintage Reserve Port at the 2012 Cape Port Producers’ Association Challenge, which is arranged by the Cape Port Producers’ Association. The 2008 Cape Vintage Reserve Port was awarded a gold medal whilst their popular Tinta Mocha 2011 was acknowledged as one of the Top 10 red wines in the Cape Portuguese Wine category at this competition.

“We are thrilled by these recognitions, which further establish us as front runners within the port industry in South Africa,” says winemaker, Boets Nel.
