'How can I impress my work colleagues with my wine choice?'

Dear Chard O’Nay,

I’ve been invited to a work function with 6 other colleagues at the Bosses house. We’ve each been asked to bring a bottle of wine with us but my problem is that I have no idea what wine to bring. I want something that looks nice and makes me stand out from the others. Please help, I don’t want to be the laughing stock.
Dear Confused Colleague,

An invite to a work function, I’m flattered. I shall inform your Boss of how excellent your grammar and punctuation skills are... oh, you meant a wine that looks nice. Yes, of course you meant that. Silly me.

Well, it seems you can go one of three ways; you can question why your Boss is such a cheapskate for not providing the necessary booze. This may lead to your fellow colleagues agreeing with you and you all staging a coup which may or may not lead to you being fired and your name being tarnished.

You could spend a ridiculous amount of money on a pretty bottle with suspicious contents which, after the consumption of 7 other bottles of wine, no one would be able to tell the difference but your wallet may feel the blow.

Or, you could go for substance over style, find out what the theme of the night is and what food will be paired and then offer to match your wine with a course (you can check our Pinterest page for pairing ideas). This will guarantee brownie points with the Boss and your colleagues will marvel at your knowledge and wisdom. Either that or they’ll hate you for brown-nosing but you may have had too much to really care.

Ciao, Chard.
