Morgenster Estate
Morgenster’s owner Giulio Bertrand has just unveiled the fourth vintage of Nebbiolo from his Italian Collection – Nabucco 2010. He has now released a limited number of 3-bottle cases containing Nabucco 2008 (blend of Nebbiolo, Merlot, Petit Verdot), 2009 (Nebbiolo) and 2010 (Nebbiolo).
As with all of Morgenster’s reds crafted to age well, Bertrand releases only a portion of each vintage at launch date with the balance being evaluated and released in batches that showcase its progression. Henry Kotze, Morgenster’s winemaker, says that these wines will be offering much pleasure in 20 years time.

The compilation costs R930 ex cellar and can be ordered from admin@morgenster.co.za

Nabucco 2008: Blended from 68% Nebbiolo, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, it is a bright pomegranate red, which offers sweet red cherries, rose and lilac notes, and hints of ripe tomato and truffles to the nose. On the palate there is balance between minerality and sweet fruit, together with a kirsch, cranberry type tanginess. Fewer than 2000 bottles were produced.

Nabucco 2009: Reverting to 100% Nebbiolo as in the maiden vintage, this is an elegant wine, deeply nuanced with loads of structure. On the nose it presents sweet red and black cherries, rose and lilac notes and hints of ripe tomato and cinnamon spice. The palate is balanced between sweet spice and sweet fruit and a cherry, cranberry tanginess. Production was just over 1700 bottles.
