Vergelegen Estate
Vergelegen wine estate in Somerset West, renowned for its history, award-winning wines and natural beauty, is fast gaining a reputation for excellent food in contemporary surroundings.
Following the success of ‘Stables at Vergelegen’, the bistro-style restaurant which launched in March 2012, the estate is opening ‘Camphors at Vergelegen’ in November. This signature restaurant, which overlooks expansive lawns and gardens, takes its name from the magnificent camphor trees – at least 300 years old – in front of the historic homestead.
The Vergelegen culinary team, which includes renowned chef, mentor and food judge Garth Stroebel as a consultant, has brought acclaimed chef Peter John ‘PJ’ Vadas on board for this next chapter of Vergelegen’s hospitality rejuvenation.

Vadas honed his skills at Gordon Ramsay New York, Pembreys in Knysna and other leading restaurants; for the past four years he was at the helm of the Roundhouse in Cape Town.

The resultant menu is described as cuisine that shows simple restraint with complex precision and which supports local producers. Vergelegen produces classical wine varietals and the menu reflects a modern take on local and international classic food.

The elegant interior, courtesy of Christiaan Barnard Interiors & Design of Stellenbosch, provides a perfect backdrop for guests to experience a relaxed, finely choreographed food and wine ritual while soaking up the estate’s 312-year-old heritage.

‘Camphors at Vergelegen’ opens on 1 November 2012. Lunch will be available from Wednesday to Sunday between 12h00 and 15h00 and dinner from Friday to Saturday from 18h30 to 21h00.
