Of the 1744 wines and brandies entered for the Veritas Awards this year, only 58 or 3.3% received a prestigious double gold medal. Eight South African wine cellars secured almost half of the total number of double gold medals awarded. International judges Lim Hwee Peng, Janåke Johansson and Thomas Lüber joined forces with 100 Cape Wine Masters, wine writers, academics, winemakers and consultants to determine which wines and brandies were worthy of Veritas acclaim. The Veritas Awards is organized by the South African National Wine Show Association and is the longest running wine competition in South Africa synonymous with excellence in wine. Jordan Cobblers Hill Bordeaux Blend 2008 Complex dark chocolate, black cherry and cassis intertwine with opulent blackberry fruit, and hints of mint and toasty vanilla. This is a big mouth-filling wine, with densely layered ripe tannins, beautifully balanced and refined - the ultimate expression of the Jordan terroir. 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc - barrel matured for 24 months Jordan Chardonnay 2010 This limy citrus expression of Chardonnay is brimming with fruit flavour and elegance with a buttery toastiness from the French oak rounding off the complex hazelnut and citrus flavours. The wine was matured “sur lie” in the barrel for 9 months with occasional rolling of the barrels to accentuate the rich character. A reserve tank-fermented Chardonnay was blended with the barrel-fermented wine to ensure well-balanced citrus flavours. Jordan Nine Yards Chardonnay 2011 Butterscotch, spicy cloves, lemon/lime and orange peel blend with complex mineral flavours. A rich mouthfeel and subtly balanced toasty French oak integrate with the long, tropical peach and melon finish. The Nine Yards Chardonnay is made in a Reserve Style, from a barrel selection from the best vineyard site at Jordan. Stylistically different to the Jordan Chardonnay, with this wine Jordan Wine Estate went “The Whole Nine Yards”!
